When I decided to try to garden I settled on a butterfly garden. Being a nerd, I spent the winter researching everything I could find and felt that the best place would be between the house and garage as both sides would get at least half a day of sun and be protected from the wind. I researched plants and drew little circles on graph paper. Spring came and I ripped out the sod, bought some plants and added some that I'd started from seed. Family members donated others. Some bulbs were added in the fall. I knew the plants would spread and fill in over time but I am quite shocked with the difference in just a year!

I don't think it was beginners luck at all. You worked hard putting that gardent together and taking care of it. It looks great!

When I moved to this house six years ago, there was already a bird and butterfly sanctuary. Sad to say much of it I didn't recognize until a year or two later. I thought the milkweed patch was terribly ugly then but I love it now and can't wait for the monarchs that always make their appearance. I was sad when we had to pull the huge old ivy vine from our barn chimney as it was a wonderful place for the sparrows, but very bad for the barn. Besides, my husband wanted to hook up a woodstove to keep his shop warm. Maybe this year I'll find a new sopt to grow ivy...
