H is for Hibiscus

Last year my grandson, Alex, was in the end of the year preschool show. His part was to say, "H is for hibiscus." This was quite a big deal for him and he practiced his line diligently for two weeks before the performance. I had purchased a hibiscus early in June that was mislabeled as hardy here. The flowers were red and bit on the small side. The bush did well and doubled in size. All summer long we teased Alex that it was his plant.

I was very disappointed this spring when it didn't come back. I found another for sale but I wasn't going to pay that much for a plant that won't overwinter here.

A couple of weeks ago I was doing Mom's grocery shopping at Wegman's, a local chain here, and found a little hibiscus for $4! It just flew right into the cart. If I had been thinking clearly I would have bought more. It finally opened today and I was pleasantly surprised by the pink throat.


It's a small little bush but with the promise of many more big flowers that's ok. Maybe in the fall I'll bring it inside as see if it will overwinter here after all.
